RICHARD MCGOWAN CONFIRMED FOR THE TECHNOLOGIES FOR SUSTAINABILITY INTERNATIONAL ROUNDTABLE
We are delighted to announce that Richard McGowan, Managing Director and Co-Founder of Fathom Group, will join the Technologies for Sustainability – International Roundtable as a panel speaker in Aberdeen on the 21st October 2026.
Richard brings more than 20 years of experience across the offshore energy sector, spanning design, installation and commissioning. Today, his work combines that practical engineering background with the development and deployment of digital engineering solutions for energy infrastructure.
As Managing Director and Co-Founder of Fathom Group, Richard leads a UK-based offshore engineering and software company specialising in lean, high-fidelity digital engineering. Its work supports asset integrity decisions and planning across offshore renewables and subsea infrastructure.
His experience raises an important question for this year’s Roundtable: How do we use technology to make better decisions about the infrastructure we already have and the infrastructure we are about to build?
Digitalisation is often discussed as an objective in itself. But its value ultimately depends on what it enables people to do differently. For complex offshore assets, that means turning engineering information into better decisions: understanding asset condition, identifying where intervention is required, planning more effectively and using engineering resources where they create the greatest value.
Richard also brings the perspective of an entrepreneur who has built a business around solving those problems. Alongside his engineering career, he has undertaken entrepreneurial development through programmes including MIT’s Entrepreneurship Development Programme and Scottish leadership initiatives, and remains actively involved in innovation networks across the North East of Scotland.
That combination of engineering, technology and entrepreneurship makes his perspective particularly relevant to a Roundtable concerned not simply with developing sustainable technologies, but with how those technologies become useful, deployable solutions to real industrial challenges.
The fourth edition of the Technologies for Sustainability – International Roundtable will be the first held outside London. It is being organised by MBY Consultants and The FuturED Institute in partnership with the International Green Trade & Commerce Association, with institutional support from OEUK and the Nuclear Industry Association.
We look forward to welcoming Richard and hearing his perspective on how engineering expertise, digital technology and entrepreneurship can come together to solve the practical challenges facing the future offshore energy system.
